North Carolina is quickly becoming a very popular destination for many Americans to call home.

People are flocking here for our temperate climate, stunning mountain views, and lower cost of living. If you’ve been considering moving to North Carolina, congratulations! We’re one of the friendliest states in the US, and our state offers a ton of things to do, both outdoors and indoors. But before you pack up and make the move, here’s 10 things we think you should know:

#1 There’s only one kind of tea. And it’s sweet tea.

The first thing you’ll figure out it that everyone in NC drinks iced sweet tea, and it’s about the only type of tea on the menu here.

#2 Bless your heart doesn’t mean what you think it does

When someone says “bless your heart” it’s not quite the kind of blessing you think it is. Typically it means, aww your poor naive thing, but it can also be used sympathetically or in pity. Just know you’ll hear it a lot down here.

#3 Get ready to meet all of your neighbors

North Carolina holds the title as one of the friendliest states in all of the US. Expect to see a lot of your new neighbors as soon as you move in, and don’t be surprised when you’re invited over for a glass of sweet tea.

#4 BBQ is a serious matter

North Carolina takes their barbecue very seriously. It’s not uncommon to hear coworkers arguing heatedly about which joint in town is the best. Make sure you choose your favorite wisely.

#5 And so is college basketball

The Duke-UNC rivalry pretty much divides the entire state. People take their college basketball as seriously as they take their barbecue down here, so make sure you know where you stand before you get here.

#6 Tomatoes are an everyday affair

Homegrown heritage tomatoes are about as popular as sweet tea in the summer, served with every meal. If you don’t have your own garden, you’ll likely have neighbors who do, and will be more than happy to share their award-winning tomatoes with you.

#7 Everyone goes to the Biltmore

Exploring the Biltmore Estate is a rite of passage for every North Carolina resident. Everyone has gone at one point, and most of us will go again. It’s one of the oldest, largest estates in the entire country, and we’re proud of it.

#8 Waterfalls are more common than you’d think

Expect to see some gorgeous waterfalls no matter where you go in North Carolina. Our many rivers and mountains lead to just as many waterfalls, a unique site for a lot of people just moving to the state.

#9 Craft beer is king (besides sweet tea, of course)

The craft beer scene has taken serious hold here in NC, and nowhere is more famous for breweries than Asheville. If you’re not ordering sweet tea, you’re probably choosing a craft beer.

#10 Nature tops everything here

Blue Ridge Parkway

North Carolina is home to some of the most spectacular natural sights in the US. You’ll want to make sure you drive the Blue Ridge Parkway a few times a year at least, to take in some of our best views.
